Why the Medical Examiner May be Involved?
The San Diego Medical Examiner (coroner) becomes involved when a death requires official review to determine cause and circumstances. Their role is to complete the legal and medical documentation needed before release.
1) Unexpected or sudden deaths
Sudden medical events or unexplained deaths require investigation to determine cause.
2) Unusual or suspicious circumstances
If circumstances are unclear or potentially involve injury or negligence, the Medical Examiner conducts a formal review.
3) Unattended deaths
When someone passes alone or without medical supervision, an investigation is required to confirm what happened.
4) Deaths in custody
Any death occurring in police or institutional custody must be reviewed by the Medical Examiner.
5) Accidents or traumatic events
Work-related or accidental deaths may require official determination of cause and documentation.
What Happens at the Medical Examiner?
The San Diego Medical Examiner’s office works with investigators and medical staff to determine the cause of death and complete all required legal documentation before release. Most cases are completed within a few days, depending on the complexity of the investigation.
1) Intake and Identification
The Medical Examiner gathers identifying information, medical history, and details surrounding the death. If next of kin cannot be reached, a standard due diligence period is completed before release can proceed.
2) External Examination
A physical examination is performed to document visible findings and determine if further investigation is needed.
3) Internal Examination (if required)
An autopsy may be performed to examine internal organs and determine cause of death when necessary.
4) Toxicology Testing
Samples may be collected to check for medications, substances, or other contributing factors.
5) Additional Testing
Imaging or laboratory tests may be performed when more information is needed.
6) Medical Examiner Report
Once complete, a formal report is issued summarizing the findings and authorizing next steps in the release process.
Once the Medical Examiner completes their process and release is authorized, we immediately coordinate the next steps so your loved one can be brought into our care.
